Outdoor recreational activities have become very popular over the past few years, including more people discovering off-road adventures. To help riders and drivers who are new to off-roading, California State Parks, Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division has teamed up with the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association, Specialty Vehicle Institute of America, and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation to provide free training to California off-roaders this year.
“To be safe and get the most fun out of your ATV, ROV, and dirt bike means learning the special skills and techniques needed to operate them properly,” said Tim Rice, OHV training specialist for the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association. “In these hands-on safety courses, students practice everything from properly starting and stopping the vehicle, to rider-active body positions, to navigating a variety of terrain, getting over obstacles, swerving, going up and down hills, making turns, quick stops, and more. Riders and drivers also learn about responsible trail use, proper etiquette, and the safety gear they need to wear for their ride.”
Even seasoned riders and drivers can benefit from the online and hands-on courses.
“Just like athletes have spring training, riders and drivers need to brush up and practice their skills before going out on the trails,” said Jun Villegas, field operations manager of the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America. “The better your skills, the more fun you’ll have.”
California riders and drivers interested in a free hands-on class can check availability and enroll at the California Outdoor Recreation Foundation website.
“If you can’t make it to a hands-on class, take a free ATV or ROV online eCourse,” Rice said. “There are a ton of valuable information, including tips on how to prepare for your ride and smart riding strategies.”
